Family gap cover doesn’t have to be expensive, and GapCover is one of the most affordable ways to protect everyone

It’s no secret that most gap covers in South Africa offer a discounted rate when you cover your whole family. What you might not know until you start your comparison, is that the actual cover varies significantly. For a family watching their monthly expenses, that difference matters.

With GapCover, even our entry-level plan, from R243 per month, has your whole family covered.

Why do families with medical aid still get unexpected bills?

When you sign up for a medical aid, you might think that’s all you need for full cover if you are admitted to hospital. This is not the case. Your medical aid pays the rate it has set itself and your hospital or specialist can charge well above it. There’s almost always a gap to cover.

According to the Council for Medical Schemes Annual Report 2024/25, specialists are allowed to charge up to 500% of the Medical Scheme Tariff (MST). That means up to five times what your medical aid is willing to pay for your admission. Your medical aid covers what it covers. The rest lands on you. For a single person, that gap can sting. For a family, it can be a serious financial blow. One hospital visit can generate multiple specialist accounts, the surgeon, the anaesthetist, the assistant surgeon, each with its own shortfall. Add in co-payments and sub-limits, and the bills can stack up quickly. Affordable gap cover exists to close that gap, so unexpected medical costs don’t catch your family off guard.

Family rates are common, so what makes the difference?

While most providers offer a family rate, not all of them make it as easy to access. Some reserve family pricing for mid-tier or premium plans. Wanting to cover your whole family doesn’t have to throw out your whole budget. GapCover’s Primary option is designed with your whole family in mind. It was built for first-time gap cover clients and for people who need solid cover without the premium price tag. The best part? It includes a family rate from the start. For R243 per month, your spouse and up to six dependants are covered under one policy. That’s comprehensive shortfall protection for your whole family, without needing to upgrade to a plan that might be out of your price range.

If you’re comparing family gap cover nation-wide, the combination of low entry cost and flexible family pricing is often what makes the decision easy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the family rate available on all GapCover plans?

Yes. Every GapCover plan includes a family rate, from the entry-level Primary option at R243/month to the Elite plan at R380/month. You don’t need a premium plan to cover your dependants.

Do my dependants need to be on the same medical aid?

Not necessarily. Spouses can each be on their own separate medical aid schemes and still share one gap cover policy. You can also split children across each spouse’s scheme under that same policy.

However, children cannot be on their own medical aid scheme and then added to a parent’s gap cover policy — in that case, they would need their own separate gap cover policy.

What waiting periods apply to GapCover family cover?

Standard waiting periods apply in line with South African gap cover regulation. A general (3) three-month waiting period typically applies from your policy start date, with a (12) twelve-month waiting period for pre-existing conditions. Confirm the exact terms with GapCover when you apply, as these can vary by plan. It’s also worth knowing which situations GapCover doesn’t cover before you apply.

If you’ve been putting off gap cover because you thought family pricing meant a premium plan, now you know it doesn’t. GapCover covers your whole family starting from R243/month. Apply online in under five minutes, no waiting on hold, no paperwork, no catch. Get covered today.
